3 Keys to Success in an EMT Class

February 21, 2020 by Amanda Goble

Are you ready to be the best EMT student you can be? Whether you sign up for our Kirkland, WA class or somewhere else we want you to be your VERY BEST! Here are 3 Keys to Success for your next EMT Class! Like many post-secondary classes that train you directly for a job, the EMT class is a different experience for many students when compared to what they are used to in education.  Keeping a few things in mind will help put you on the road to EMT class success!

3 Keys to Success

  1.  Find your people!  Take the first few classes to evaluate who you work best with and who you might be able to create a study group with.  Not everyone in your class will be the optimal choice…just like the workplace. Choose wisely. Pick someone who challenges you and has similar values when it comes to studying and performance standards.
  2. Grow up!  This is an adult class.  Treat it as such. Show up on time and be ready to learn every day.  If your educational experience is limited to high school classes, be prepared for the expectations of this class to be much higher.  This is fast-paced and there is no room for absences or missed opportunities to succeed.
  3. You’re either 1st or your last!  This is a bit of an exaggeration, but remember what you are training to do.  Would you want an EMT that barely passed the standard to provide you or a loved one with care, or would you want that rock star EMT that put their all into their class and craft?  I think we all know the answer to that one. This training and all subsequent training from here on out deserves your best effort and complete attention.

Bonus material:  The job of an EMT is about all competent compassion.  Being able to do a clinically professional task while tempering the emotions of the moment and people involved (you included) is a difficult juggling act….but that is exactly what you are signing up for when you step into the world of emergency medicine.

I hope you enjoyed your 3 Keys to Success for your next EMT Class!

I was getting taught by firefighters not college professors. If you want to be a firefighther – this is the first step – you won’t regret it.”
